What Is a Compound Bow Trigger?

The trigger — often called a release aid — is the interface between the archer and the bow. It clips onto the bowstring D-loop and, when activated, cleanly releases the string to launch the arrow. Unlike fingers-on-string shooting, a mechanical release eliminates string torque, delivers a cleaner arrow flight, and produces tighter groupings — which is why virtually every competitive archer and serious bowhunter uses one.

The trigger mechanism inside a release aid is deceptively demanding. It must hold 30–80 lbs of draw weight without creeping, then release instantly with minimal travel and zero friction when the archer squeezes. The sear engagement surfaces — where the trigger sear meets the catch — determine everything: creep, crispness, overtravel, and long-term consistency.

The game-changing advantageof MIM for triggers is surface finish. An as-sintered MIM sear engagement surface (Ra 0.8–1.2 μm) needs minimal polishing to achieve a crisp, creep-free break — whereas a machined sear starts rough and must be ground and lapped through multiple grit stages.
