What Is a Smart Lock Cylinder?

The lock cylinder is the beating heart of any lock — smart or mechanical. It houses the pin tumbler mechanism (or electronic actuator in smart locks), receives the key or motor command, and translates that input into the rotation that drives the deadbolt or latch. In a fingerprint smart lock, the cylinder must integrate the mechanical security of a traditional lock with the electronic actuation of a smart device — all within an envelope barely larger than a thumb.

At Precision-mim, we MIM-manufacture smart lock cylinders in SUS304 stainless steel. The process produces the complex internal bore geometry, pin chambers, keyway profile, and mounting features in a single operation — no deep drilling, no broaching, no multi-setup CNC.

Traditional lock cylinder manufacturing is a sequence of subtractive operations: drill the main bore, broach the keyway profile, drill and ream the pin chambers, mill the mounting slots and retaining grooves. Each operation requires a dedicated tool, a dedicated setup, and introduces cumulative tolerance error.
